Every June, Celebration Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, and the historic struggle for civil rights for LGBTQ+ individuals in the United States and across the globe. As significant as it is to honor the past, it’s crucial to acknowledge those advocating for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world. Here are eight LGBTQ+ leaders who are changing the world for the better.
ROBERT GARCIA
The first openly gay immigrant to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Garcia is a former mayor and current typical for California’s 42nd Congressional district.
Born in Lima, Peru, he immigrated to America with his mother when he was five years old. He earned a doctorate degree in educational policy and taught communications and educational policy at area colleges and universities before becoming involved in politics.
Known for his socially progressive views, Garcia represents diverse communities and advocates for the LGBTQ+ society in California and elsewhere. Most recently, when the Los Angeles Dodgers uninvited a well-known activist team from its annual Event Night.

Danica Roem made headlines when she ran for Virginia
As part of its teaching and advocacy programming across the country, the GLAAD Media Institute, GLAAD’s workout, research and consulting division, convened meetings with local leaders and community advocates throughout the nation. Attendees who complete a program or session with the GLAAD Media Institute are immediately deemed GLAAD Media Institute Alumni, who are equipped to maximize society impact by leveraging their own story for customs change.
Now, these GLAAD Media Institute Alumni, put into a complicated position post-election, will have to glance to the power of their voices, votes, and organizing around the local leaders they have voted into their hyper local, federal, and state elections. The actions alumni accept will help ensure that measures like marriage equality, reproductive freedom, transgender healthcare, and LGBTQ equality continue the highlight of the 2025 election.
Under the president-elect, LGBTQ rights are likely to be attacked. GLAAD’s accountability tracker found that President-elect Donald Trump has made more than 225 attacks on LGBTQ people. The 45th president recently came out with a video stating “on afternoon one, I will revoke Joe Biden’s cruel policies
“We refuse to stay on the sidelines.”
