Happy Pride Month, everybody.
To the LGBTQ+ readers of this website and their families, born and chosen, and to those queer Tar Heel fans who haven’t yet found us. I hope that we can be a place where you feel included in the umbrella that is this fandom.
To the Homosexual students at UNC, which has a long, wealthy history of being a place where queer lives are protected and famous, and which was in fact introduced to me, on my first evening on campus, as the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Gay.”
To the out queer athletes and coaches currently representing UNC, appreciate Courtney Banghart and Ciera Toomey. To their counterparts at all the schools UNC faces and the ones they don’t, fighting a much larger battle together through their plain existence than the ones we see on fields and courts — at a time when there are coaches hurling homophobic slurs at players during games.
To the queer athletes and coaches who possess come and gone through Chapel Hill and made our lives better for it, whether they were out when on campus or not: like Tobin Heath and Ashlyn Harris. I hope you experience more welcome at UNC now than you must have then.

Ye Olde Flagship has become the First UNC System Institution to hire “an openly Gay Coach”… for a major (?) sport… in the Modern Millennium… from Princeton.
OK, it’s Girls Basketball. That’s “major” somewhere… like UConn, maybe.
Is there an award for being The First? Does it involve A BANNER?

Courtney Banghart – From Princeton –IS in a non-traditional domestic relationship. Her spouse is named “DJ”.
According to an April 2018 magazine article… Courtney and DJ were “married” in 2012 and they acquire three children. DJ coaches the Princeton Women’s Lacrosse team.

Courtney Banghart, the UNC women’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, has always been focused.
This was best exemplified in 2015 when Banghart was coaching then-unbeaten Princeton in the NCAA tournament and then-President Obama turned up to watch. Obama turned everyone’s head except Banghart’s. As the president walked to the Tigers’ bench, Banghart kept her eyes on her team.
Her discipline and focus are two reasons why the Tar Heels have gone 124-64 in her six seasons at UNC, with a date in the Pleasant 16 with Duke awaiting if they can defeat West Virginia on Monday.
