Gay gangbanger
There are many stereotypes of and assumptions about lane gangs, just as there are many stereotypes and assumptions about gay men. Pretty much none of those stereotypes overlap.
In movies and television, some of the most noticeable gay characters have been portrayed as effeminate or weak; they’re “fashionistas” or “gay best friends.” Highway gang members, on the other hand, are often depicted as hypermasculine, heterosexual and tough.
This apparent contradiction was one of the main reasons I was drawn to the subject of gay gang members.
For my manual “The Gang’s All Queer,” I interviewed and spent time with 48 male lover or bisexual male gang members. All were between the ages of 18 and 28; the majority were men of color; and all lived in or near Columbus, Ohio, which has been referred to as a “Midwestern gay mecca.”
The trial, which took place over the course of more than two years, allowed me to explore the tensions they felt between gang life and queer manhood.
Some of the gang members were in gangs made up of primarily gay, lesbian or bisexual people. Others were the only gay male (or one of a few) in an otherwise “straight” gang. Then there were what I summon “hybrid” gan
When I first came to prison, I didn’t perceive how I should execute. I was a lgbtq+ man, convicted of a sex crime. We’ve all heard the horror stories. But I had one thing going for me: I was big, weighing in at 310 pounds, a fair amount of which was muscle. For the most part, other inmates left me alone.
That is, until the other gays and trans establish out about me. At the time, one of the gangs, which called themselves the Aryan Knights, used “beating up fags and chomos (child molesters)” as an initiation for new members. Like I said, they pretty much avoided me—preferring to move after the smaller and weaker. But that meant that a number of gay men and gender nonconforming women suddenly wanted to be my boyfriend (or girlfriend), not because they liked me in that way, but because they figured I’d protect them.
For a while, I went along with it. At one point I was the “boyfriend” of six different people at the same time. But I tired of being used, and wanted real companionship, so I eventually started hanging out with just one cute little guy who seemed to include genuine affection for me. I was devastated when I saw him kissing someone else in the gym bathroom.
