Felicia Day’s new book Adopt Your Weird is a self-help book to obtain one’s creative juices flowing. Thankfully my juices possess been flowing just okay here on my blog but I’m such a huge fan of Felicia’s that I went to her book signing for the opportunity to encounter her and get my books signed. In my gay opinion, Embrace Your Weird is a playfulness read and could be really helpful for folks with a creative block (especially writers) or people who’s anxiety gets in their way. It’s a book that will aid people be more imaginative as well as finer people.
Embrace Your Weird is more of a function book than just an inspirational book, however there’s a couple things that Felicia doesn’t understand about me (shocking since she spent a whole minute with me). When I get a book signed I delicately read it, trying not to tilt the spine or any of the pages, and won’t let anyone else even breathe near it. Felicia has activities on almost every other page encouraging readers to draft and draw on them. Nope, not gonna take place. Just the thought of graffitiing the book has me breaking out in hives. GAMUT, n. In my notes on the love affair novels below, “gamut” came up. It turned out to be really pleasurable. I think of it as meaning a “range” and only use it in the expression “to run the gamut,” i.e. to cover the whole range, but when I wrote that below, I had to ask myself, “What’s a gamut and why can you race it?”
The answer is melody. It’s a scale! Running the gamut is singing or playing all the notes.
“Gamma” and “ut” were the names of notes for musicians in medieval Europe. People used to say “gamma ut” to refer to playing all the notes from gamma to ut. It eventually ran together into “gamut.” (French has the delightful word “gamme” for this same concept, and it seems impossible that it did not occur to me that gamme and gamut were related until I was writing this. You learn something every day!)
Musicians don’t use either “gamma” or “ut” anymore. I think “gamma” fell out of fashion because it was associated with a medieval system that’s no longer how people think about music, but honestly there were a lot of incomprehensible charts when I delved into that (hexachords?!) and I am not qualified to tell you any more.
