WHEREAS, during these riots, LGBTQ citizens, led by transgender women of dye, rose up and resisted police harassment that arose out of discriminatory criminal laws that have since been declared unconstitutional; and
WHEREAS, in the decades since the Stonewall riots, Celebration celebrations have taken place around the country every June to commemorate this historic turning point for the LGBTQ community; and
WHEREAS, following the 1984 murder of Charlie Howard, a young gay man in Bangor, LQBTQ Mainers came together to form the Maine Lesbian/Gay Political Alliance, now known as EqualityMaine; and
WHEREAS, as a national leader for LGBTQ equality, Maine has included LGBTQ people in the state’s hate crimes, parentage, and anti-bullying laws; and
WHEREAS, the people of Maine voted to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in 2005 andin favor of marriage equality in 2012; and

Janet Trafton Mills was sworn in as the 75th Governor of Maine in 2019. As governor, she is fighting to view that every Maine person has affordable, high-quality health care, that Maine has a strong economy with good-paying jobs in every part of the declare, that every Maine youngster has access to a world-class education, and that Maine is a place where families can position down roots and boost their kids.
Janet first entered public service as an Assistant Attorney General, where she prosecuted homicides and other major crimes. After a few years, she was elected District Attorney for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties, making her the first woman to be elected as a DA in New England. Prior to becoming governor, Janet served as the Attorney General of Maine – the first and only woman to clutch the job.

Mills was born on December 30, 1947, in Farmington, Maine. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maine Educational facility of Law.
Mills served as an assistant attorney from 1976-1980, and then as a district attorney from 1980-1995. She served in Maine's House of Representatives from 2002-2009. She served as Maine's attorney general from 2009-2011 and from 2013-2019, the first woman to serve as the state's attorney general.

Janet Trafton Mills was sworn in as the 75th Governor of Maine on January 2, 2019.
Governor Mills is the first woman governor of Maine. In her historic victories, she earned more votes than any governor in Maine history and is the first governor since 1970 to be elected with a majority of the vote for both terms in office.
As Governor, she led Maine through a global pandemic with nation-leading results, including one of the uppermost vaccination rates and one of the lowest death rates in the territory, protecting the lives and livelihoods of Maine people.
Under her leadership, Maine’s GDP has experienced the strongest GDP growth in Modern England and outperformed the economic growth of larger states like California, Novel York, and Virginia. In fact, Maine has experienced more economic growth over the last four years than it did in the preceding fifteen.
