It is always interesting to me that the older a wine gets, the more it can style the same as other similar varieties. An aged Tempranillo, not so unlike from Cabernet or Shiraz, it makes you wonder why we keep them so long, especially with old wines such an acquired taste.
I first tried this wine at a splendidly debaucherous event, the Good Food and Wine Show back in the early &#;s. Dan Murphy&#;s had established a walled area in the middle of the show and inside was a veritable cornucopia of delights. Aged wines, international wines, fascinating &#;new brands&#;, champagne, you name it. So, for no additional charge thought you, it was doable to drink as much 10 year old Leuwin &#;Art Series&#; Cab or Gold Label Lanson as you wanted while the rest of the society lined up for Moet Chandon&#;I mean lines around the block BTW.
Anyway, endorse to my point&#;it was all free&#;and then I found this. The dollar was high, interest in wine regions outside of the Barossa was short, and Spanish wine barely rated a thought for most. After so much lamb from Easter i wanted to eat something softer and decided to cook some turkey with garlic and chilly stuffed into the meat and roasted in olive oil for dinner. As a matter of fact first was the wine selection and then the food, but don&#;t tell anyone. The wine is something special.
First of all very brief about Marques de Murrieta. Marques de Murrieta is unquestionably one of the head bodegas in Rioja. Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is a traditional Tempranillo dominated blend, which tracking on from six months in vat will often see in excess of 36 months in American oak before bottling. There is also a Reserva Especial, a similar combine also subject to prolonged wood ageing; both wines are only made in the best vintages, otherwise Marqués de Murrieta will produce a range of standard Gran Reservas and Reservas. Castillo Ygay has the same label for over years.
