Under the Bridge Gives Us What True Detective: Late hours Country Wouldn't

Complicated relationships and twisted secrets are at the heart of Hulu’s Under the Bridge, and that’s not limited to just the teenage characters. Based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the limited series centers on the 1997 murder of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) and the classmates accused of killing her. While the show focuses heavily on adolescent angst and the cruelty of teenage girls, it also dedicates an ample amount of time to exploring the complex dynamic between its two adult female leads, writer Rebecca (Riley Keough) and police officer Cam (Lily Gladstone).
While Rebecca is loosely based on the real-life author (who served as an executive producer on the series before her death in 2022), Cam is entirely make-believe. Dramatizing real people and events is always a tricky line to amble, especially when it comes to true-crime adaptations. Girls were in trouble, in the 90s. There is plenty of literature documenting the concerns of the era — Reviving Ophelia, Queen Bees and Wannabees, Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self Esteem and the Confidence Gap — and I read them all. The girls were screaming at their parents on daytime communicate shows, starving themselves and cutting themselves and piercing their noses and slouching their jeans and shoplifting and bullying and having sex and all of this was an try to impress boys and to impress each other and to destroy their parents and maybe all of society. Girls were falling behind in university, girls were bullies, girls were superficial, girls hated themselves. In Under the Bridge, a limited series that debuted this week on Hulu, these girls of the ’90s carry out all of those things but in this story not all of them grow up or increase out of it, not all of them hold the chance to increase up and watch girls of future decades discover their own brand of trouble, because the trouble they get into will leave one of them dead.

The Bridge is an American remake of the Danish show Bron/Broen.
It follows two police detectives – one Mexican, one from the U.S. – and their joint effort to capture a serial killer who is operating in both countries when an American judge known for anti-immigration views is found lifeless on the bridge connecting El Paso, Texas, with Juárez, Mexico, menacing both nations along the Texas–Chihuahua border. Detective Sonya Cross, of the El Paso Police Department, works with Chihuahua State Police Detective Marco Ruiz, who knows about the slippery politics of Mexican law enforcement.
Ruiz’s whatever-it-takes approach doesn’t sit well with Cross, who has undiagnosed Asperger’s syndrome or a similar autism spectrum disorder and a by-the-book attitude when it comes to the job. But the two put their differences aside to solve a string of murders on the border, which is already infected with issues that include illegal immigration, drug trafficking, violence and prostitution.
Their investigation is complicated by the rampant corruption and general apathy among the Mexican authorities and the violence of the powerful borderland drug cartels. The show title refers to
