Dylan O’Brien Used Director James Sweeney’s ‘Gay Scale’ to Play Brothers in ‘Twinless’: He’d Express ‘You Were Too Unbent on That’
“I’m egregiously picky,” insists Dylan O’Brien, reflecting on a burst of productivity that, in the last 12 months, includes the films “Ponyboi,” “Saturday Night,” “Caddo Lake,” the Max comedy series “Fantasmas” and James Sweeney’s “Twinless,” which screens at Sundance. “I’m going to get skewered for this type of quote being out there … but I would have a much distinct career, I think, if I was a ‘yes to everything’ person.”
After launching his career more than a decade ago as a heartthrob on MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and in the “Maze Runner” films, each of those recent projects earned the actor praise for his versatility; no two roles are the equal. But according to O’Brien, his recent slate reflects not just one year of work but more than five — a period that also encompasses guest spots (as “himself”) on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
The early reviews for Jordan Peele’s Weird City are in and it has been confirmed (as shown in the trailer) player Dylan O’Brien is playing a queer character on the show. Of course, certain people have an issue with such a casting choice.
If you are someone who has been part of the Teen Wolf fandom and understand about the hate Dylan O’Brien gets for playing Stiles, the most accepted character from the present, the current uproar over his casting in Weird City shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
I would have ignored the issue if it didn’t comprise the very real issue Hollywood has of casting straight actors in gender non-conforming roles. It is something I take quite seriously and that is why I decided to draft this opinion piece.
Do I think queer actors should play queer roles? Yes!
Queer actors, who are publicly out, don’t get the same opportunities as unbent actors do even when they are auditioning for queer roles.
Do I contemplate every queer role should go to a homosexual actor? No.
I’m someone who looks at the plan as a whole. For example, Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise will have a queer character. Now, that is a role which should have gone to

The Maze Runneralum reflected on the visibility he hopes to shed on the LGBTQ+ community and their diverse stories by starring in projects prefer his new movie Ponyboi.
“I have many people in my life in the queer space and in the trans space,” Dylan exclusively told E! News. “It's always been something natural to me to support people that I love and that I want to see—especially in this industry—telling stories, especially now.”
And although Ponyboi—in theaters now—was filmed in 2022, the Teen Wolfstar explained that he is grateful for the opportunity to shine a light on queer stories in the present day.
“In many ways, I'm so thankful that it's coming out in this moment with what this country is experiencing in particular,” Dylan continued. “It couldn't be more of a meaningful moment for this movie to be coming out now”
The 33-year-old also emphasized his excitement for audiences to see his costar River Gallo, who wrote the movie and sta
Dylan O'Brien's sibling responded to statements the actor had previously made about them.
For context, The Maze Runner and Teen Wolf player plays a pimp in the movie Ponyboi, which is about an intersex sex worker. Though the movie was filmed in late 2022, it's position to be released in the US later this year.
This is why, on May 1, Gay Times ran a story with the headline, "Dylan O'Brien says he's 'so grateful' for his trans genderfluid sibling."
The quotes themselves are from a Vulture interview last January, where Dylan said, "I have a trans, nonbinary sibling and I know people in my personal life as well who are homosexual, and I am so grateful for how much it deepens my trial in this world.”
So, the article itself is more about the movie, but the headline, caption, and image posted on Instagram were all about Dylan's sibling, Julz — implying that Dylan had said this recently. The caption reads, "O’Brien’s sibling, Julz O’Brien, is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. On Instagram, Julz frequently shares family photos—including with O’Brien, whom they’ve described as their 'very first leading friend'—and often expresses celebration in being part of the LGBTQIA+ commun
