A new era of heartthrob is here, and Nicholas Galitzine is its poster boy
At first, I mind it was the sun.
Perhaps its rays, which dipped sneakily in and out of cloud cover on a breezy March daytime in Austin, were distracting Nicholas Galitzine, who kept looking away from me distractedly as we stood on the red carpet at the SXSW Festival premiere of his clip "The Idea of You."
Instead, Galitzine's own star authority had caught the attention of dozens of ecstatic fans, who were wailing his name just a few feet away.
"Sorry, I'm really trying to center on you, but people are shouting," he apologized, fittingly midway through an answer about the sex scenes in "The Thought of You" as shrieks of Niiiiiiick! rang out behind me.
Did you not expect this? I asked.
"Kind of no," he replied, laughing.
Galitzine's bashfulness — and his genuine-seeming surprise in seeing the swarm of fans who'd flocked to Congress Street to grab a glimpse of him — is another intriguing layer to what makes him the most curious rising star heartthrob in Hollywood today.
The 29-year-old player has been working steadily since 2014, when he landed his first movie role in the song comedy-drama "The Be
Nicholas Galitzine Says He’s Linear, Feels “Somewhat Guilty” For Taking Gay Roles, And Is “Terrified” Of Organism Defined As “A Sever Of Beef”
Nicholas Galitzine, who has played several lgbtq+ or queer characters both on TV and in films, says he has felt “somewhat guilty” over the possibility that he, as a straight guy, is “taking up someone’s space.”
In an interview with GQ, Galitzine, currently starring as a gay character in the Starz drama George & Mary, said, “I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some unbelievable queer stories. I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s territory, and perhaps guilt. At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality.”
Galitzine also currently stars opposite Anne Hathaway in the romance production The Idea of You. Last year he starred opposite Taylor Zakhar Perez in the Prime Video gay royalty romance clip Red White and Royal Blue, and has portrayed a closeted gay rugby player in the production Handsome Devil (2016) and a bisexual character in the 2020 The Craft: Legacy.

There comes a moment in any young male performer’s life when he is faced with the press tour for his latest gay role and must make a choice: come out as vertical or give a vague quote about how sexuality is fluid. It has happened to Josh O’Connor, Jack Falahee, Darren Criss, Taron Egerton, Andrew Garfield, and now Nicholas Galitzine, who came out as straight on May 8 in British GQ, igniting the same discourse all over again. Galitzine has played gay multiple times in the past year (Red, White & Royal Blue and Mary & George) and gave a homoerotic performance in Bottoms. “I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible homosexual stories,” Galitzine said. “I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt. At the same moment, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality.”
By this point, everyone’s going through the motions. There have been somanyarticles, Reddit posts, Twitter threads, Quora queries, and actors sharing their opinions over the years. Each rehashes why it’s okay or “n
