Crete was one of our first vacations as a gay couple and although there isn’t a enormous gay scene in Crete we felt very welcome on this beautiful island and have returned many times since!
Crete is the largest island in Greece offering everything from pretty soft sand beaches, to rich historical sights, a thriving nightlife scene and mountains inland to examine by car.
During our trips we had no issues being gay in Crete and felt particularly pleasant around the touristy areas. The most popular destinations in Crete for lgbtq+ travellers are typically Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Agios Nikolaos, as well as Malia (where there is a young party crowd).

Heraklion Town, alongside Hersonissos and Malia, features a relatively organised gay overnight scene including several queer and gay-friendly venues dispersed through the city. Same-sex attracted acceptance in Heraklion is at pretty high levels, even though the locals choose to keep their sexuality a secret as they still follow a very traditional way of living.
