Tom Selleck Once Sued A Tabloid For Saying He Was Gay
Tom Selleck rose to fame as Thomas Magnum in the 1980s series Magnum P.I. With his tall stature, wonderful looks, and iconic mustache, he sent women swooning.
And while he had never given any indication that he was anything other than heterosexual through the roles he played or his relationships off-screen (including his marriage), that did not stop a tabloid from claiming he was gay.
Never being one to back down from setting rumors straight about himself, Selleck sued the tabloid.
Tabloids get away with making outrageous claims about celebrities for a multitude of reasons. But, one of the biggest is the fact that the publications have very large legal teams.
Because of this, celebrities have to weigh the pros and cons of bringing a lawsuit against publications and the writers given that the case may be tied up in court for a long time and potentially cost a small fortune. Most find that it is not worth it and just hope for the headline to explode over.

However, Selleck was not willing to let this happen and slapped a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against The Globe.

I think he is probably gay. Way back in 1990, I was living in London for about a year (I'm American). I became friends with a sapphic couple, one of whom worked in the theater on the technical side of things. She was acquainted with Jillie Mack. She said it was well known in the theater world that Mack was Selleck's beard. Mack was well aware she was marrying a male lover man (or at least bi). The arrangement supposedly worked for the both of them.
I believe her story because she also told me she worked a show where Kelly McGillis had been in it. She said Kelly was a closeted female homosexual and kind of struggled with it. I didn't believe it at the time because it had only been four years since Top Gun was a huge hit and a couple years since The Accused. McGillis publicly came out 19 years later in 2009.
The female who told me these two stories was not prone to exaggeration. Why would she be right about one and untrue about another? Based on her inside gossip, I tend to believe he's likely gay or bi, although she said complete on gay.

We all remember that long kiss Tom Selleck planted on Kevin Kline in In & Out, right?
There were plenty of people who advised the Magnum PI and Blue Bloods star against taking the role.
‘I was playing a closeted gay television reporter and a tabloid had said I was gay just a few years earlier,’ Selleck says in the current issue of TV Guide.
But after starring in the box office hit Three Men and a Baby and its sequel, Selleck was keen to do another excellent comedy and In & Out fit the bill.

Here's my story:
When I was in college, I was dating a guy whose family owned one of the "Pawnbrokers to the Stars" businesses in L.A.
One night, we had a date, but first, he had a late-evening appointment with a client at their home up in Hollywood Hills. (The guy was a gay hairdresser at one of the studios - un-stereotypically a masculine top, though.) I was going to linger in the car, but my boyfriend told me to come in with him, so that I could meet the guy, whom he also considered a friend. (I reflect he wanted to reveal me off... lol.)
Anyway, my boyfriend didn't know his friend was hosting a dinner party, so the introduction was short, and I just waited in the entry hall while they went upstairs to quickly do the pawn transaction (Yes, there was a briefcase of cash involved chained to my boyfriend's wrist no less.)
